Ancient terror comes furiously to life in this first version of “Medusa” by Franz von Stuck. At the heart of a titanic nocturnal battle, the heroic figure of Perseus stands, triumphantly brandishing the freshly severed head of the Gorgon. Medusa’s deathly pale face radiates a greenish, spectral glow in the center of the composition, her wide eyes retaining their petrifying power. Facing him, another athletic silhouette contorts in the darkness, perhaps a victim of the fatal spell of the cursed head. The dark blue sky, swept with tormented clouds, serves as a dramatic backdrop to this mythological violence. An energetic artwork, where the macabre meets the grandeur of the symbolist movement.
