Madonna of the Pomegranate by Sandro Botticelli

This sacred representation of intense lyricism and melancholy, temporarily titled “Madonna of the Pomegranate”, is a masterly tondo executed by the brilliant painter of the Florentine court, Botticelli Sandro. Part of the artistic pinnacle of the Italian Renaissance, this work integrates multiple theological symbols specific to private devotions. At the center of a circular frame, the Virgin Mary, dressed in a red pleated robe under a large night-blue mantle, tilts her oval face with lowered eyelids. She gently holds the infant Jesus seated on her lap, whose tiny hands are placed on an open pomegranate, a symbol of the Passion and future Resurrection. Six angels with androgynous features and curly hair symmetrically frame the scene, holding tall stems of white lilies and open prayer books. Some of them direct melancholic and benevolent gazes toward the Virgin, while delicate golden halos surround their heads. Above the Madonna, a luminous crown of golden rays emanates from an azure sky, flooding the clear skin tones with a highly gentle celestial light.
