Madonna and Child and the young St-John the Baptist by Botticelli

This delightful painting of private devotion, created by the master Botticelli Sandro, beautifully embodies the sweetness and tenderness of Florentine Renaissance art. Temporarily titled “Madonna and Child and the young St-John the Baptist”, this magnificent work depicts the affectionate relationship between the Virgin, her divine Son, and the young precursor. The painter expresses here a warm, human Christian faith, far from the more rigid medieval representations.

A young mother dressed in a deep red robe and a dark blue cloak embroidered with gold leans forward solicitously. She affectionately carries in her arms a young naked child who seeks the kiss of another young boy dressed in animal skin. The latter holds a thin wooden cross, symbol of his prophetic destiny beneath a clear blue sky. In the left background, a bush of wild blooming roses brings a touch of spring freshness and Marian symbolism. The diagonal composition and the soft light envelop the three faces in an intimate and serene atmosphere.

Botticelli Sandro demonstrates his immense talent in the subtle rendering of the children’s delicate skin and the expressions of maternal tenderness. His skillful use of paint allows him to give a velvety texture to the fabrics and a great depth to the landscape.
