Lucifer 2 (Stuck)

This other vision of the Prince of Darkness by Franz von Stuck presents a “Lucifer” that is equally chilling but in a different dynamic. The creature is depicted from the front, leaning slightly forward out of a thick shadow evoking large black wings. His chin still rests on his hand, a symbol of his nature as a tortured thinker. The brownish complexion and coppery reflections contrast with the surrounding darkness. The gaze here is more shadowy, piercing the soul of the observer with a dull hostility. The pictorial technique, made of visible brushstrokes and impasto, gives a raw and almost aggressive texture to the canvas. A masterful interpretation of the figure of absolute evil in turn-of-the-century art.
