Last Judgment by Jean Fouquet

This spectacular eschatological vision masterfully illustrates the twin themes of divine salvation and eternal damnation in medieval art. Entitled “Last Judgment”, this colossal work is created by the famous Jean Fouquet, a virtuoso illuminator who here merges the sacred terror of the Middle Ages with the spatial order of the Italian Renaissance. Through this binary composition, the painter delivers a theological synthesis of extraordinary plastic power.

The panel is divided into two distinct worlds. In the upper part, Christ in Glory, enveloped in a large scarlet red cloak, sits enthroned in the heavens, surrounded by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist in prayer. At his feet, the archangel Saint Michael in golden armor steps on a giant skeleton symbolizing death, weighing souls above a chaotic earth. The lower part opens onto the terrifying depths of Hell, a giant monster’s maw where a multitude of damned souls writhe in pain, cast into the red flames by bestial demons of grotesque shapes.

Jean Fouquet here shows the full extent of his genius through the anatomical rendering of dozens of bare bodies and the dramatic management of colors. His exceptional technique in contrasting the divine serenity of the celestial azure with the incandescent fury of the abyss raises this work to the rank of an absolute masterpiece.
