Landscape by Degas

The Impressionist and experimental landscape by Edgar Degas, temporarily titled “Landscape”, departs from his usual Parisian themes of ballet and the Opera. Created during his travels, this painting demonstrates the artist’s growing interest in natural scenery and coastal views. In this surprising work, Degas Edgar explores the contours of nature with remarkable freedom, far from the academic strictness of the Parisian Salon.

The original composition highlights large rocky monoliths rising proudly in the foreground of a green meadow. On the left side, a massive dark and steep rock catches the shadow, while a rounder, greener mound occupies the center-right of the canvas. In the background, a winding dirt path snakes through rolling hills stretching under a stormy sky filled with greyish and purplish clouds. The distant hills and green pastures interlace under this changing and mysterious light. The diffuse and soft light envelops the dry grass in reddish and golden tones, creating a melancholy atmosphere at the end of the day.

The exceptional craftsmanship of Edgar Degas is wonderfully displayed through this bold application of pastels over a monotype. The artist uses energetic hatching and textured layers to carve the rocky shapes and convey the roughness of the wild ground.
