Hercules and Nessus by Franz von Stuck

This dynamic and dramatic work, drawn from the mythological tales of classical Antiquity, is part of the European Symbolist movement. Entitled “Hercules and Nessus”, it constitutes a major achievement by the famous German painter and sculptor Franz von Stuck. The scene illustrates with great force of movement the tragic struggle between the savagery of the centaurs and the heroism of the demigods. Through this intense visual narrative, the artist explores the duality of human nature and destructive passions.

On the left, a muscular and athletic hero wearing an animal skin on his head and shoulders is represented in profile, drawing a large red bow to the right. A quiver filled with arrows is suspended from his left flank. On the right, a centaur with a bay horse body and a man’s torso flees at a gallop in the air, his body pierced by an arrow. He firmly holds a woman dressed in a red and white dress who seems to faint in his arms. The ground consists of a dark, grassy green plain under a misty sky with light, yellowish hues. The impetuous movement of the fleeing centaur contrasts with the stable posture of the archer.

The creator deploys incomparable craftsmanship in the rendering of the characters’ vigorous anatomy and the rendering of the scene’s instantaneous movement. His perfect mastery of oil painting allows him to breathe an impression of speed and physical tension that is entirely striking.
