Fortitude by Sandro Botticelli

This monumental allegorical painting, a masterpiece of the Florentine Renaissance, is one of the most famous creations of the young artist Botticelli Sandro. Designated under the temporary name of “Fortitude”, this figure personifies one of the four cardinal virtues intended to adorn the city’s commercial tribunal. Through this sovereign representation, the painter merges the classical ideal of beauty with the intellectual vigor characteristic of the humanist thought of his time.

A noble young woman is seated on a marble and carved wood throne of incredible architectural richness, decorated with scrolls and moldings. She is clad in bright metal armor protecting her chest and arms, worn over a finely pleated white robe. A large scarlet red mantle is draped over her left shoulder and falls in wide folds over her legs, revealing her bare feet shod in complex sandals. With her two slender but firm hands, she holds a heavy black and silver baton of command across her knees. Her slightly tilted face expresses a deep melancholy and a contained inner strength, illuminated by a soft light that sculpts the volumes of her fair complexion.

The technical virtuosity of the craftsman is expressed in the exceptional rendering of different materials, from the polished metal of the cuirass to the heavy drape of the red mantle. His perfect mastery of drawing and linear perspective gives the throne an architectural presence of striking realism.
