Fantômas by Juan Gris

This magnificent masterpiece of synthetic cubism, painted by the famous Spanish artist Juan Gris, is entitled “Fantômas”. Created during a period of intense artistic effervescence, this complex still life bears witness to the evolution of the formal research of the Parisian avant-garde. Through this major work, the artist explores the breaking up of volumes and the insertion of elements of modern popular culture. The canvas demonstrates his successful transition towards a more legible and poetic cubism.

In the center, a brown wooden table with highly pronounced grain supports several fragmented everyday objects. On the left stands out the green cover of a Fantomas book decorated with an intriguing black mask and the number sixty-five. On the right, a crumpled copy of the daily newspaper Le Journal reveals its black letters on a white background. Above, a black and yellow geometric structure features a bright yellow disk like a star. A green bottle equipped with a black siphon is also outlined against a violet and dark red background. The raking light highlights the contrasting textures and the rigor of the flat composition.

Gris’s virtuosity is fully expressed in the meticulous imitation of materials, notably the remarkable trompe-l’oeil effect of the wood grain. Through an exceptional mastery of oil painting, he creates striking contrasts of textures between the simulated paper and the table. This technical prowess confirms his role as a virtuoso theorist of the movement.
