Europa on the Bull Art Deco (Wegener)

This second version of the myth of Europa is more stylized, more Art Deco. The bull here is dark brown, powerful, adorned with a very graphic floral garland. Europa, with her long wavy blonde hair, sits sideways, her pale body contrasting sharply with the animal’s dark coat. Other female figures surround her, some playing music, others caressing the bull. The composition is dense, filled with intertwined curves. The faces have those almond eyes typical of Wegener (and Lili Elbe). It is a pagan and sensual celebration, where the myth becomes a pretext for a study of female grace and ornamentation.
