Diptych of the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment by Jean Fouquet

This visionary diptych work depicts the themes of redemption and divine judgment with unprecedented spiritual strength. Entitled “Diptych of the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment”, this strikingly dynamic double composition is painted by the giant Jean Fouquet, who here merges medieval eschatology with Renaissance spatial harmony. The scene is structured into two distinct vertical registers teeming with details. On the left part, the Crucifixion shows Christ surrounded by a multitude of horsemen and mourners under a very clear blue sky. The right part illustrates the Last Judgment, where Christ in Glory, dressed in red, sits enthroned in the heavens, while the archangel Saint Michael defeats the forces of evil. Below, a giant skeleton straddles the pit of hell, where a horde of damned souls writhe in pain in the flames and under the claws of monstrous demons. The intensity of the colors, from celestial blue to the fiery red of the flames, structures the whole.

Jean Fouquet here displays all the virtuosity of his brush in orchestrating complex crowd scenes and anatomical representations of bodies. His ability to juxtapose divine serenity with infernal fury bears witness to an extraordinary plastic genius.
