Dante and Virgil at the Entrance to Hell by Degas

This powerful dramatic work is a custom painting of classical literature

The powerful romantically inspired painting titled “Dante et Virgile à l’entrée de l’enfer” was created by the young artist Degas Edgar. This dramatic early work is directly inspired by the Divine Comedy and demonstrates the painter’s early interest in classical literary subjects and Italian Renaissance masters. The artist explores here a dark and monumental aesthetic, prefiguring the audacity of his future research on human expression.

The image depicts two draped figures standing at the threshold of a dark abyss of almost total obscurity. On the left, Virgil, wrapped in a long rigid grey-green cloak, inclines his head towards his companion. On the right, Dante, dressed in a crimson tunic and a bright red hood, stretches his hand towards his guide’s with an expression of fear mixed with deference. A dark deep blue-green drape covers Dante’s shoulder, contrasting with the brightness of his red robe. The raking light dimly illuminates the grave profiles of the two men, revealing the spiritual tension and the solemnity of their union. The rocky and dark background reinforces the distressing depth of the chasm.

Degas Edgar deploys a remarkable technique of oil on canvas to create a dramatic chiaroscuro of great psychological intensity. His work on the heavy folds of the draperies and the modeling of the faces shows an exceptional academic rigor. This early and intense work reveals an acute sense of pictorial narrative and tragic monumentality.
