Dancers by Degas

This late masterpiece highlights Edgar Degas’s stylistic evolution toward a freer and more vibrant expression of color and form. Through the pastel temporarily titled “Dancers”, the artist explores the intimacy of dancers captured in the moment during an intense preparation. Linked to the Impressionist movement, this work stands out for its tight and bold framing that plunges the viewer directly into the heart of the action.

The composition focuses on the torsos of several ballerinas joined by a play of intersecting lines. In the center, a redhead dancer is shown in profile, her face cast in shadow as she raises her arm above her head. She wears a bright orange and yellow bodice that contrasts with the milky skin of her shoulders. Behind her, a second ballerina performs a similar gesture, creating a rhythmic mirror effect. On the right, a third figure dressed in a striped green bodice emerges, completing this compact group. The background consists of a forest landscape suggested by vigorous green and ochre hatchings. The rough texture of the pastel catches the light, creating an intense vibration.
