This captivating work by Edgar Degas, temporarily titled “Dancers”, reflects the artist’s deep fascination with the ballet universe within the Impressionist movement. Departing from traditional indoor rehearsal scenes, the painter chooses to integrate his figures into a poetic landscape setting. Three young ballerinas are depicted sitting or leaning against the massive, dark trunk of an ancient tree that dominates the left of the frame. The central dancer, with auburn hair adorned with a red flower, is seen in profile, while her companion with long loose black hair looks to the right. In the background, a mountainous landscape with ochre and green hills is silhouetted under a soft blue sky washed with pink.
