Dancer in Green by Degas

This graceful work is a magnificent custom painting capturing the ethereal lightness

This graceful work is a brilliant testament to Edgar Degas’s fascination with the ballerinas he tirelessly observed on the stage of the Paris Opera. Through this luminous composition temporarily titled “Dancer in Green”, the painter captures the ethereal lightness of live performance. This delicate pastel lies at the heart of the Impressionist movement, characterized by a constant search for the decomposition of light and the spontaneity of the artistic gesture.

In the center of the sheet, a solitary dancer performs an arabesque on one leg, her body leaning forward with infinite elegance. Her left arm stretches obliquely upwards while her right hand lowers gently towards the ground. She wears a vaporous white tutu, subtly enhanced with small blue floral motifs and a bodice with golden reflections. Her head, crowned with a glittering tiara, tilts gently, revealing a concentrated face. The background is organized around masses of warm colors, blending ochre and green to suggest a forest stage set. The theatrical light floods the ballerina from above, making the powdery medium vibrate.

The artist’s technical virtuosity is fully expressed in the masterly use of pastel, which restores the vaporous transparency of the tulle. By superimposing light hatchings and delicate stumpings, Edgar Degas manages to sculpt the fleeting movement of the dance. His exceptional craftsmanship lends this stage scene a timeless and vibrant poetry.
