Cups, Newspaper and Bottle of Wine by Juan Gris

This exceptional masterpiece of synthetic cubism, produced by the theorist painter Juan Gris, bears witness to an extraordinary graphic creativity. In this complex composition entitled “Cups, Newspaper and Bottle of Wine”, the artist assembles pasted papers and pencil drawings to reorganize the space of still life. The scene unfolds vertically along large brown wooden panels with striated grain. On the right stands a bottle of wine or water bearing a white label marked with the printed letters “EAUX ANC”. In front of it, two transparent glasses are represented: one contains a golden yellow liquid, while the other, empty and faceted, shows an elegant stem. On the left is inserted a large ochre document displaying the number “N° 10574”, with the legible mentions “Rédacteur en chef” and “LAUZANNE”. A bright light, coming from the left, traverses these various vertical planes, creating transparencies and graphic contrasts of great precision.

The exceptional technical expertise of the artist shines through the impeccable juxtaposition of charcoal, gouache, and cut paper.
