Crucifixion by Jean Fouquet

This tragic fresco illustrates the culmination of the Passion of Christ with remarkable emotional and spiritual intensity. Entitled “Crucifixion”, this composition is painted by the talented Jean Fouquet, who here renews sacred iconography by injecting a deep human dimension. The crucified Christ rises in the center on a tall wooden cross, flanked by the two thieves also tortured on their respective crosses. At the foot of the crosses, a dense crowd of horsemen and soldiers in plate armor and colorful turbans moves in a striking disorder. In the very foreground, the Virgin Mary, enveloped in a midnight blue cloak of great depth, collapses in grief, supported by Saint John and the holy women dressed in emerald green and dark red draperies. The background reveals a distant distant landscape under a blue sky dotted with thin white clouds. The divine light seems to concentrate on the central figure of the Savior.

Jean Fouquet excels in individualizing expressions of suffering and detachment on the faces of the assembly. His sense of aerial perspective and the precise rendering of the sparkling metal of the armor bear witness to his unquestionable technical superiority.
