Crossing a Ford in Morocco by Eugène Delacroix

This hand painted copy expresses the indomitable energy of warriors crossing the water

This exceptionally lively equestrian composition belongs fully to the Orientalist vein of French Romanticism, nourished by the artist’s travel memories. In the masterful work entitled “Crossing a Ford in Morocco”, the famous painter Eugène Delacroix expresses all the energy and movement of North African horsemen. This scene powerfully depicts the crossing of a watercourse, illustrating the proud and untamable temperament of these warriors as well as their perfect symbiosis with their mounts.

In the foreground, a warrior seen from behind wades through the water, dressed in a green tunic and carrying a long rifle on his shoulder. On the left, a horseman mounted on a white horse with red harness surges out of the water, brandishing a long lance. Behind him, a troop of armed riders follows closely, their mounts kicking up silvery splashes. In the center and on the right, other silhouettes of riders cross the ford under a late afternoon sky tinged with yellow and orange. The wild landscape consists of arid hills that gently stand out on the horizon. The water subtly reflects the changing colors of the sky.

The work highlights the artist’s technical virtuosity in his mastery of oil painting, particularly in capturing dynamic movement and animal spirit. His rapid and vibrant touch, combined with an exceptional sense of color and light, gives this cavalry scene an extraordinary expressive power.
