“Contrasting Objects on a Blue Background” is a work by Fernand Léger that belongs to his “objects in space” series. Against a deep, solid blue background, the artist arranges a diverse collection of elements. On the left, a sculptural female head, rendered in tones of beige and gray, anchors the composition. Alongside it, biomorphic shapes, mechanical objects, and a green leafy branch are arranged like a modern still life. Léger plays on the contrast of forms (rigid/soft, organic/manufactured) and colors (the cool blue background against touches of red and yellow). The objects seem to float in an undefined space, freed from gravity. The thick black outlines give each element a distinct presence.
