Church of San Simeone Piccolo by Canaletto

This remarkable painting is fully part of the eighteenth-century Venetian vedutismo movement, characterized by extraordinary topographical fidelity. Through this masterpiece provisionally titled “Church of San Simeone Piccolo”, the great painter Canaletto explores another famous perspective of the Grand Canal. The work highlights the majesty of neoclassical religious architecture set against the daily life of Venice's boatmen.

In the center of the painting rises the church of San Simeone Piccolo, recognizable by its large circular green dome and its Roman-inspired columned portico. Several small figures in simple peasant and merchant attire stroll on the white stone steps of the building. In the foreground, slender black gondolas and small fishermen’s boats glide over the dark, calm waters of the canal. The boatmen stand upright, maneuvering their long oars and creating light reflections on the surface of the green water. On the left, a tall ochre plaster building lines the canal under a pure, intense blue sky.

The painter shows an absolute mastery of geometric perspective to structure this highly stable urban landscape. His refined oil technique allows him to render with striking realism the roughness of the brick and the texture of the white marble. The work bears witness to his technical virtuosity.
