Cherry Blossoms at Yoshino by Katsushika Hokusai

This highly delicate spring print illustrates the traditional celebration of cherry blossom blooming in Japan, a symbol of impermanence. A steep hill is almost entirely covered by a sea of pink and white cherry blossoms, forming very dense, cotton-like clouds. Through this floral mist emerge the dark roofs of several temples as well as a large bright red torii gate marking the entrance to the sacred sanctuary. On a winding path on the left, a group of travelers wearing flat straw hats climbs toward the temple, some guiding a brown horse loaded with luggage. On the bottom right, two pilgrims carrying burdens converse joyfully near the base of the hill. The sky above presents a gradient from deep blue to soft ochre at the horizon.

The artist shows extraordinary skill in organizing a complex composition with multiple planes. His technique of representing cherry blossoms, superimposing small touches of color to create volume, demonstrates quite exceptional artisanal expertise.
