Cardiff Team 1 by Robert Delaunay

This dynamic and urban work, temporarily titled “Cardiff Team 1”, embodies the assimilation of popular culture and advertising by the artist Robert Delaunay. By integrating textual and advertising elements into his chromatic research, the painter becomes the chronicler of Parisian modernity and speed. This innovative canvas prefigures the developments of Pop Art by merging high art and commercial imagery in a spectacular way.

The left part of the canvas is dominated by a large, bright, and vibrant yellow panel bearing the advertising inscription “ASTRA” in large red capital letters, surmounted by a modern building with geometric architecture. In the center and on the right, colored blue, yellow, and green discs energetically intersect with the metallic structure of a red and white Ferris wheel evoking a modern funfair. Another green-colored panel clearly displays the white letters “LAUN”, blending in a very intimate way into the urban dynamism of the street scene. The primary and secondary colors are extremely brilliant and applied in simultaneous contrasts, illuminating the entire composition with an intense and festive electric light.

The artist shows a masterly control of large-format composition and the technique of oil painting applied in contrasting layers. His craftsmanship allows him to integrate graphic text within a moving plastic space with impressive aesthetic fluidity.
