This striking detail of a moral allegory of the Florentine Renaissance, created by the illustrious master Sandro Botticelli, isolates the two key figures of redemption in the face of the ravages of calumny. Temporarily entitled “Calumny of Apelles*”, this pictorial section masterfully opposes the timeless purity of divine revelation with the earthly burden of guilt. On the left, the figure of naked Truth is represented in the form of a woman of ideal beauty. She points her right index finger toward the sky while concealing her nudity with a modest gesture. Beside her, Penitence is embodied by a wrinkled old woman. The latter is enveloped in a heavy, tattered black cloak. They both stand on the red-tiled floor of a monumental palace. In front of them stand pillars decorated with niches housing sculpted warriors. The light illuminates the diaphanous body of the naked woman from the front, contrasting with the dark mantle.

The craftsman’s mastery is beautifully expressed in the opposition of textures, from the velvety quality of the feminine skin to the rigid folds of the mourning fabric. His incomparable mastery of contour drawing gives both characters a sculptural clarity of striking expressive force that leaves a deep impression.
