Calumny of Apelles by Sandro Botticelli
Order this northern renaissance painting denouncing the ravages of cruel calumny
This secular allegory of extraordinary conceptual complexity, painted by the eminent artist Sandro Botticelli, represents one of the summits of humanist art of the Florentine Renaissance. Provisionally entitled “Calumny of Apelles”, this painting adapted from an ancient text constitutes a sharp social and moral critique. The painter denounces the ravages of falsehood and injustice within a theatrical architectural setting, bearing witness to his classical culture and profound intellectual commitment.
In a vast courtroom with vaults adorned with gilded bas-reliefs, King Midas sits on his throne. Flanked by Ignorance and Suspicion, he listens to Calumny, embodied by an elegant woman. She is guided by Hatred and drags a stripped young man who pleads along the ground. Beside her, Deceit and Envy hasten to adjust her hair. On the left of the room, Penitence, dressed in a tattered black mantle, turns toward Truth. The latter is a completely naked woman who proudly points to the sky. Large open arches reveal a calm sea on the horizon.
The craftsman deploys exceptional technical expertise here in the linear precision of the drawing and the abundance of gilded sculptural details in trompe-l’œil. His ability to materialize abstract concepts into living, expressive figures confirms his status as a visual theorist of immense intellectual refinement.
