Reproduction hand painted of the painting
Black Magic 2 (Magritte)
A second variation on the theme of “Black Magic” (1935), this work by René Magritte presents a frontal and powerful composition. The nude female figure stands upright, facing the viewer, her body split into two distinct realities. As in the first version, her chest, shoulders, and face share the texture and color of a light blue summer sky, creating a poetic fusion between the human and the atmosphere. The lower part of her body, from the waist down (though not visible), is rendered in warm, realistic skin tones. This version introduces two notable elements: a heavy red-brown curtain on the right, which frames the scene like a theater set, and a white rose held in the woman’s left hand. The curtain reinforces the feeling of a surrealist "staging", while the rose, a symbol of purity and love, contrasts with the title "Black Magic". The woman rests her right hand on the same type of gray rock as in the other painting. The background combines the sky and a dark sea. Magritte, master of mystery, confronts us with the impossible. Is it a statue coming to life? A woman turning into the sky? The work defies logic and invites dreamlike contemplation on the nature of identity and the permeability of worlds.
