Billiard Room at Ménil-Hubert by Degas

The exploration of interior spaces took on an almost experimental dimension under the innovative gaze of Degas Edgar, a leading figure of modern realism. His painting titled “Billiard Room at Ménil-Hubert” revisits the theme of the private billiard room with surprising chromatic audacity. By reworking this familiar scene, the artist departed from strict documentary description to offer a vibrant study of color and light, prefiguring the avant-garde movements of the next century.

The structure of the room centers around the imposing billiard table, whose playing surface is exceptionally covered with a deep blue cloth instead of the traditional green.
