Berck Seascape Fishing boats and fishermen by Édouard Manet

A beautiful vigorous wall decoration highlighting the daily labor of sailors

This vigorous seascape fits into the tradition of coastal genre scenes while announcing the modern aesthetic of Impressionism. The virtuoso Édouard Manet highlights the daily labor of seafaring people, harmoniously integrating the title of the work which is “Berck Seascape Fishing boats and fishermen” at the heart of this maritime composition. The work captures the raw atmosphere of the northern coasts of France, staging the daily confrontation of fishermen with the natural elements and the changing sea.

On a light sandy beach in the foreground, a group of fishermen in work clothes busies itself around a large fishing basket. Some wear blue jackets, reddish trousers, and wide-brimmed hats, active under a winter light. On the right, an imposing fishing boat made of dark wood is beached on the shore, its masts pointing toward the heavy sky. In the background, the dark and choppy emerald-green sea extends to a high horizon line, where a sailboat with brown sails swollen by the wind glides. The low, greyish sky, heavy with dense clouds, envelops the scene in a diffuse and mercury light.

The artistry of Édouard Manet is revealed in his broad and nervous brushstroke which forcefully models the foamy waves and the raw wood of the boats. His mastery of oil painting allows him to capture the wet texture of the sand and to convey the dramatic energy of maritime labor.
