Banana Harvest (Rousseau)

“Banana Harvest” is another of Henri Rousseau’s forays into an imaginary tropical universe. The scene depicts two figures in a banana plantation. They carry freshly cut bunches of bananas on their shoulders, while others are already piled on the ground. In the background, a simple thatched-roof hut nestles in a forest of palm trees with immense, stylized leaves that fill almost the entire space. The color palette is dominated by deep greens and earthy browns, creating a dense and humid atmosphere. The artist’s naive style is particularly visible in the depiction of the figures and the flattened perspective. Rousseau does not document an ethnographic reality, but rather paints a poetic vision of labor in an exotic paradise, a scene of simple, laborious life in a generous and invasive nature.
