This intense work by Edgar Degas, temporarily titled “Ballet Scene 1”, spectacularly illustrates the painter’s innovative style within the Impressionist and realist movement of the late nineteenth century. She gently holds the edges of her dress with both hands, her head bowed towards the ground in an attitude of bowing. The background of the stage bursts into dramatic colors, mixing swirls of bright red, orange, and dark brown evoking an ignited volcanic landscape. In the left foreground, dark and blurry masses suggest stage sets or the orchestra pit. The bright light of the footlights strikes her legs, creating dynamic shadows.

Degas Edgar reveals here his genius as a colorist by contrasting the acidic tones of the tutu with the fiery shades of the background.
