Marc Franz
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc co-founded the avant-garde group Der Blaue Reiter with Vassily Kandinsky in the early twentieth century. Moving away from German academic naturalism, the artist developed an original reflection on the animal kingdom and the spiritual meaning of colors. His work aligns with Expressionism in Germany. This quest for cosmic harmony renewed Bavarian visual arts.

The artist’s painting assigns a precise symbolic value to each primary color, associating blue with the masculine principle and yellow with feminine gentle warmth. Animals became his exclusive subjects, embodying natural purity in contrast to industrial modernity. In “The Blue Horse”, simplified forms integrate seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Dynamic chromatic rhythm is illustrated in “The Large Blue Horses”, where sweeping curves structure space. Playful energy appears in “The Yellow Cow”, expressing joyful vitality and rhythm. Finally, dramatic foreboding darkens “The Fate of the Animals” through intense geometric fragmentation.

As a key theorist of early abstract art, the painter left a fundamental imprint on European modernism. His research into the emotional value of color profoundly inspired subsequent avant-garde movements. His artistic legacy remains a milestone of early twentieth-century German art.
Owning a reproduction by Marc offers the unique opportunity to rediscover his poetic color energy, faithfully recreated through a hand-painted oil painting.
