Welcome to our selection of works by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres(1780-1867)
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was a 19th-century French Neoclassical painter. His
father, Jean-Marie-Joseph Ingres, a painter and sculptor, encouraged his artistic inclinations. He
was trained at the Academy of Toulouse, which he entered at the age of 11, then went to Paris in
1796 to study under David. He moved away from his
classicism by his devotion to an ideal of beauty based on
difficult harmonies of lines and colors. He painted portraits of friends as well as Pierre-François
Bernier, whom he knew from Montauban. He won the Prix de Rome in 1801 on his second attempt, with
The Ambassadors of Agamemnon. His work essentially covers three genres: historical painting, mainly
during his Italian stay, portraits, even if he considered this
genre minor during his youth, and female nudes.
