Supported by official institutions from his earliest canvases, Jean-Léon Gérôme pursued a brilliant career in Paris as a student of Paul Delaroche. An essential teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts, this French painter and sculptor embodied the height of academic art during the Second Empire and the Third Republic. By training numerous international painters in his large studio, the master successfully perpetuated the tradition of French classicism. His enduring aesthetic legacy remains a major source of influence for historical cinematic set design.
