Derain André
Trained at the Académie Camillo where he met Henri Matisse, André Derain actively participated in the birth of the French avant-garde in the early twentieth century. As a co-founder of the Fauvism movement at the 1905 Salon d’Automne, the artist explored the liberation of pure color. His career later evolved toward structured research influenced by Cubism and classicism. This artistic trajectory reflects the transformation of European visual arts.

The artist’s painting is initially characterized by broad flat areas of pure, unmixed colors juxtaposed with energy. During his productive period in Collioure and Chatou, intense Mediterranean sunlight heightened vibrant hues. In “The Drying Sails”, the fragmented brushwork expresses the dynamic atmosphere of the maritime landscape. His British series, illustrated by “Big Ben - London”, demonstrates a synthetic vision of the Thames with luminous reflections. Later, his style matured by incorporating a rigorous geometry of volumes inspired by Cézanne. Finally, the theatrical composition of “Harlequin and Pierrot” testifies to his neoclassically inspired period with somber tones.

A key contributor to twentieth-century aesthetic revolutions, the painter deeply marked the history of modern art through his colorful daring. His emancipation of natural color paved the way for new pictorial movements. His artistic legacy retains fundamental importance in avant-garde history.
Hanging a work by Derain allows you to bring the intensity of Fauve hues and his modern compositions into your home, faithfully recreated in a hand-painted canvas.
