The picture was painted between the 9 and the 16 on September 1888 in Arles. The coffee, which always exists, is located place of the Forum. The name of the coffee was the Terrace, it was then renamed Van Gogh coffee. The table was carried out of night, on the spot. The artist did not place himself in front of the terrace but on with dimensions one. This enables him to have depth of field and to be able to reproduce many details. The paving stones of the street reflect a multiplicity of tons blue, yellow, pink and purple. The sky is that of the Starlight night on the Rhone, painting carried out little time after or of the Starlight night, at the following year. Contrast between yellow oranges of the walls and the lighting and blue of the sky and the frontages is a contrast between complementary, these two primary colors contrast strongly especially that Vincent likes to outrage the color.
