Holy Family 1 by El Greco

This intimate and protective composition stages family devotion through the singular artistic vision of El Greco. Conceived as a celebration of divine maternity, this painting gathers several sacred generations under the temporary title of “Holy Family 1”. The closeness of the faces and the intertwining of the bodies emphasize the human tenderness at the heart of the mystery of the Incarnation.

The Virgin Mary occupies the center, dressed in a scarlet red robe and a dark veil, gazing tenderly at the infant Jesus sleeping on her lap. To her right, Saint Anne envelops the group with her large ochre cloak, a hand placed gently on an immaculate white cloth. In the bottom right, the young Saint John the Baptist, completely naked, holds a small basket of fruit while bringing a finger to his lips. Behind them, Saint Joseph observes the scene with benevolence, his bearded face standing out against a background of gray and moving clouds. The light concentrates on the milky skin of the newborn.

The craftsman's know-how is expressed in the treatment of heavy draperies and the richness of skin textures. His unique technique of layering colors gives an internal warmth and a particular vibration to this sacred family gathering.
