Saint James the Great by Jean Fouquet

In the center of the composition on a green and luminous lawn, a kneeling holy man with blindfolded eyes prays with fervor just before his public execution. Behind him, a robust executioner in a grey doublet and red hose raises a large sparkling metal sword to deliver the fatal blow, under the watchful gaze of a sovereign on horseback and a huge crowd of soldiers armed with spears. The very foreground of the image is structured by a sculpted white marble wall where two small naked angels support scarlet heraldic shields, framing fine golden bas-reliefs. In the background, a fortified city unfolds on the horizon under a spring sky.
