San Barnaba Altarpiece by Sandro Botticelli

This monumental work of exceptional complexity is a major and emblematic creation by the great Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. Bearing the title of “San Barnaba Altarpiece”, this majestic altarpiece illustrates the pinnacle of sacred art in Florence at the end of the fifteenth century. The artist stages a sacred conversation of great theological rigor for the church of San Barnaba.

In the center, on an elevated throne under a red velvet canopy adorned with a golden shell, the Virgin holds the blessing Child Jesus. Two flying angels open heavy curtains while two others on either side show the instruments of the Passion. In the foreground, six saints stand, arranged symmetrically on a geometric marble floor. On the left are Saint Catherine in profile, Saint Augustine reading, and Saint Barnabas holding a palm. On the right, Saint John the Baptist dressed in red, Saint Ignatius showing his bleeding heart, and Saint Michael in dark armor stare at the viewer. The zenithal light sculpts the volumes and illuminates the scene with brilliance.

The Florentine craftsman demonstrates admirable expertise in the construction of architectural perspective and the richness of ornamental details. His mastery of ample drapery and metallic reflections on the armor bears witness to an outstanding and unparalleled technical virtuosity.
