Old Walton Bridge by Canaletto

This remarkable work is fully part of the eighteenth-century vedutismo movement. Through this exceptional masterpiece titled “Old Walton Bridge”, the famous Italian painter Canaletto moves away from his usual urban landscapes to immortalize a scene of the English countryside. The artist succeeds in capturing the perfect harmony between modern wooden architecture and the surrounding wild nature.

In the center of the painting, a large white bridge with a complex geometric structure rises majestically above the Thames. On the grassy bank in the foreground, a red cow drinks calmly near a female rider sitting on the ground. A rider on his white horse converses with a man elegantly dressed in a red jacket. On the left, several boatmen are busy aboard a long flat boat moored near the edge. In the background, dense groves of dark trees frame the river under a spectacular sky where heavy grey rain clouds accumulate. A low light illuminates the scene with dramatic softness.
