“Spring in Town” forms the urban counterpart to the previous work, painted by Grant Wood the same year, in 1941. Here, the awakening of nature is celebrated in the heart of a peaceful American town. The scene is buzzing with domestic activities and gardening. In the foreground, a bare-chested young man vigorously digs a square of dark, fertile soil, preparing the vegetable garden. Behind him, the neighborhood comes alive: a woman hangs a colorful quilt on a line, a man mows the lawn, another repairs the roof of his wooden house, while a little girl admires a blossoming tree. The architecture of the houses, with their colorful and geometric roofs, contrasts harmoniously with the emerging greenery.
