Picsou the Moneylender after Quentin Matsys

Flemish Renaissance genre painting is ironically revisited in “Picsou the Moneylender”, an ingenious parody of the famous masterpiece by Quentin Matsys. This painting replaces the Antwerp money changer with the world’s richest duck, Scrooge McDuck, the beloved character from the Walt Disney Company. The work transposes the original moral reflection on greed and piety into a satirical universe where the cartoon’s legendary avarice takes center stage.

The major difference lies in the presence of Scrooge McDuck in his red coat and black top hat, handling gold coins under the disappointed gaze of a woman wearing a traditional red Flemish headdress. Unlike the serene complicity of the couple in the original painting, Scrooge shows a comical obsession as he holds a coin toward the woman who is reading a devotional book, diverting her attention from the sacred text. The wooden table is scattered with piles of gold coins, precision scales, jewels, and money bags marked with the dollar symbol, replacing the more modest objects of Matsys’ original canvas. The convex mirror in the foreground reflects a window and a figure, preserving the complex perspective play of Flemish art.

The painter demonstrates exceptional technical virtuosity in reproducing the meticulousness and realism of Flemish art with oil paint. The detailed treatment of wood, shining metals, and the red velvet of the dress is remarkable. The seamless integration of the caricature into this historical setting reflects grand artistic craftsmanship.
