The Doge’s Palace by Canaletto

This painting of striking beauty brilliantly illustrates the vedutismo movement, renowned for its rigorous architectures. Through this masterpiece titled “The Doge’s Palace”, the famous Italian painter Canaletto depicts the inner courtyard of the Doge’s Palace. The richly sculpted facade of the palace is decorated with blue-and-white striped awnings hanging from the windows of the first floor. A bright and contrasted light sharply carves the shadows of the arcades on the light pavement, creating a striking visual rhythm.

Canaletto demonstrates here an unsurpassable mastery of perspective drawing and the rendering of mineral textures.
