The link of Adam after Michelangelo Buonarroti

Appropriating the most emblematic fresco of the Vatican, this dark artwork proposes a cynical reflection on the human condition. We contemplate a striking metamorphosis named “The link of Adam”, inspired by the founding scene painted by the Italian genius Michelangelo. The Renaissance master celebrated the divine spark and original freedom through heroic sculptural anatomies. The addition of contemporary prison objects brutally transforms this wonderful spiritual contact into a dark allegory of alienation and mutual captivity.

Isolated on a totally blackened background, the two muscular arms reach out towards each other in the mythical gesture of creation. However, the divine index finger and the finger of man are no longer merely separated by the void. The left wrist, representing God, and the right wrist of his creature are now shackled by heavy shiny steel handcuffs. A thick and taut metallic chain connects the two restraint rings, irrevocably binding the two entities in a shared servitude. The contrast between the vigorous flesh originally painted and the coldness of the industrial metal reinforces the tension.

The virtuosity of the copyist is revealed by the extraordinarily faithful reproduction of the muscular modeling of the hands and the prominent veins. The realistic treatment of the metallic reflections highlights a rare visual acuity when faced with the ancient patina. This goldsmith’s work majestically honors the power of figurative art.
