The Fate of the Animals (Marc)
“The Fate of the Animals” is one of Franz Marc’s most powerful and tragic works. Painted on the eve of World War I, it is an apocalyptic vision of the destruction of nature. In the center, blue animals (does or horses) are curled up peacefully, but all around them the world is exploding. Trees fall like spears, flashes of color streak across the canvas, and a glowing fire consumes the landscape. It is a chaotic and violent composition, where diagonal lines and strident colors express terror and destruction. Marc reportedly wrote on the back of the canvas: “And all being is flaming suffering”. This premonitory work transcends the fate of animals to symbolize the impending catastrophe that would befall Europe. It is the artist’s tragic masterpiece.
