Christ on the Lake of Gennesaret by Eugène Delacroix

This splendid wall decoration synthesizes the dynamism of a spectacular storm

This splendid marine composition forcefully synthesizes the Romantic aesthetic of the sublime and natural drama. Conceived by Eugène Delacroix, this version entitled “Christ on the Lake of Gennesaret” illustrates the famous biblical passage with increased spatial breadth and dynamism. The artist manages to capture the paroxysm of the storm by integrating sails swollen by the gale, which accentuate the fragility of the skiff in the face of the hostile immensity of a raging lake under a lightning sky.

In the middle of a sea of impressively high greenish and foaming waves, a two-masted boat is roughly shaken by the raging waters. The disciples struggle courageously with the ropes and the large beige sails that unfold spectacularly under the violence of the wind. At the back, Christ in a red robe and blue coat sleeps soundly, his head crowned with a brilliant golden halo. In the background, a chain of steep, dark mountains rises under a tormented storm sky, where a few rays of light bravely pierce through the black clouds. The dramatic tension is magnified by the diagonals of the masts and the chaotic movement of the waves.

The artist delivers here a dazzling demonstration of his split brushstroke technique and his sense of color. The textured rendering of the swollen sails, the transparency of the moving water, and the dramatic play of the heavenly light testify to his absolute pictorial virtuosity.
