This central segment of a major Roman Renaissance fresco illustrates the dramatic genius of the artist Sandro Botticelli in his representation of the divine and the profane. Known under the name “The Punishment of Korah”, this composition depicts the trial of the censers and the triumph of the true priesthood. The painter creates an intense visual choreography where ritual righteousness confronts the devastating punishment of rebellion.

At the heart of the image stands a circular white marble altar from which fine wisps of sweet-smelling smoke escape. Moses, represented in three-quarter view, raises his rod with anger, while the high priest Aaron, wearing a triple tiara, prays fervently in the background. Around the altar, the conspirators stagger under the effect of divine wrath, dropping their gilded bronze censers which shatter on the ground. The background is dominated by the monumental structure of a classical triumphal arch adorned with sculpted reliefs and a Latin inscription engraved in a dark cartouche. A clear light illuminates this scene of tumult, revealing the chromatic richness of the red, blue, and golden draperies.

The exceptional craftsmanship of the artisan is reflected in the meticulous reconstruction of the details of ancient architecture and the metallic brilliance of the cult objects. His technique of applying colored glazes gives an extraordinary depth and liveliness to the various fabrics of the scene.
