The Weir at the Mill by Gustave Courbet

This representation of a Franche-Comté watercourse is among the most beautiful landscape compositions of Gustave Courbet dedicated to the rivers of his region. The right bank is dominated by a high, abrupt rocky cliff, partially covered with moss and hanging bushes. A clear and bright sky, tinted with pale grey and white, unfolds above the forest valley. The light reflects intensely on the fast-moving water of the rapids, contrasting with the cool and mysterious shadow enveloping the foot of the rocks.
