Autumn - Bacchus and Ariadne by Eugène Delacroix

A blonde and semi-nude woman is seated on the ground, leaning on rich blue draperies and wild animal skins. An athletic man, crowned with grapevine leaves and bunches of grapes, stands before her and takes her hand. Above them, a winged cherub floats in an azure sky, carrying a flowering plant garland that symbolizes fertility. On the left, a golden chariot pulled by massive lions completes this pageant scene bathed in a golden light.

Delacroix deploys exceptional craftsmanship in rendering the rough stone and the satiny softness of the female flesh. His mastery of oil painting and the use of complementary colors impart a magical realism and a unique dynamism to the composition.
