This work of infinite delicacy, executed by the great Florentine master Sandro Botticelli, is fully part of the Italian Renaissance movement. Provisionally designated under the name of “Madonna of the Pomegranate*”, this circular painting expresses intimate Marian devotion and the theology of the Incarnation. Through this sacred composition, the artist captures a suspended moment of grace where maternal love meets the tragic destiny of the Savior.

The close-up focus highlights the young Child Jesus, tenderly supported by the hands of the Virgin Mary. The newborn, with curly golden-brown hair, stares at the viewer with a gaze filled with premonitory melancholy and deep wisdom. He delicately holds in his left hand a split pomegranate, symbol of the Passion and the Resurrection, whose bright red seeds recall the spilled blood. His right hand is raised in a solemn gesture of blessing. He wears a fine, translucent white tunic, while the sumptuous drapery of his mother’s red dress and blue cloak warmly surround him under a celestial and golden light.

The Florentine craftsman demonstrates here an exceptional mastery of tempera and the application of gold leaf to design the subtle halos. His delicate treatment of childish complexions and the anatomical precision of the mother’s hand bear witness to his immense pictorial expertise.
