The Virgin with Angels by William-Adolphe Bouguereau

This immense sacred fresco of celestial beauty perfectly illustrates the grandeur of nineteenth-century academic religious painting. In the sumptuous work titled “The Virgin with Angels”, the great master William Bouguereau stages the Queen of Heaven surrounded by her angelic court. The Virgin Mary is seated majestically on a carved stone throne, draped in a navy blue cloak, holding the Child Christ in her arms. Around her head shines a crown of twelve white and luminous stars. In the foreground, two angels kneel on vaporous clouds, swinging precious golden censers from which fine curls of smoke escape. The pyramidal and symmetrical composition naturally guides the gaze toward the central duo. A golden and supernatural light bathes the whole, giving a mystical atmosphere to the scene.

The artist's technical virtuosity shines in the airy lightness of the angel wings and the delicacy of the golden reflections on the censers.
