Madonna of the Magnificat by Sandro Botticelli

Study the fineness of this classic master copy illustrating the coronation of the Virgin

This masterpiece of unequaled elegance and fervor, bearing the title “Madonna of the Magnificat”, is a major Marian composition painted by the illustrious Botticelli Sandro. Designed during the golden age of the Renaissance in Florence, this circular painting stands out as one of the most famous tondi of the period. The artist illustrates with infinite poetry the crowning of the Virgin by angelic powers.

The Virgin Mary is seated in a three-quarter view, tilting her pensive face toward a book of hours placed on her lap, where she is about to write. She is dressed in a pleated red robe and a dark blue mantle, a veil decorated with colored bands wrapping her shoulders. The infant Jesus, seated on her lap, looks up while gently guiding his mother’s hand, while holding a red pomegranate in his other hand. Two angels with curly hair raise a highly fine starry crown above her head. On the left, three other angels support the book and the inkwell in a respectful attitude. In the background, a distant landscape of hills is sketched.

The Florentine creator expresses his virtuosity here through the harmony of curved lines and the use of gold leaf. His absolute mastery of tempera translates into an extraordinary refinement of the faces and the transparency of the gauze veils, confirming his status as an exceptional artisan.
